India plans to launch its first geostationary satellite launch vehicle (GSLV) in January. The rocket will use a Russian cryogenic upper stage, but an Indian-developed cryogenic stage could be used as early as the second or third flight. India's first launch of its GSLV next year will place a test satellite - the Gramsat - into orbit. The satellite will be used to provide communications services to remote villages.
