The Indian air force formally retired its last Mikoyan MiG-25 strategic reconnaissance aircraft from service on 1 May, after almost 25 years of use. “In today’s satellite era we don’t need to go over the enemy,” says air force chief of staff Air Marshal S P Tyagi. “Reconnaissance data is available to us in real time, so the MiG-25 is not cost-effective to use.”
