The Indian air force has finally sanctioned the release of $100 million covering the purchase of an advanced jet trainer. The service has short-listed two trainers, the British Aerospace Hawk and the Dassault/Dornier Alpha Jet. The Indian parliamentary defence committee has recommended to the Government that a low-cost Russian trainer aircraft at half the price should also be evaluated before a contract is awarded. A decision on the trainer competition is now expected, by the end of 1995.
