Indonesia AirAsia has kept a clean safety record throughout its years of operations.
Flightglobal’s Ascend Fleets database shows only a minor incident involving the carrier on 25 May 2007.
The Boeing 737-300, registered PK-AWP, was operating a flight on the Jakarta-Medan route when the incident happened. The aircraft was in the final stage of approach to runway 05 at Medan when the captain took over because the aircraft was going “fast”.
The aircraft eventually made a “firm” landing, and subsequent inspection found that the left nose wheel tyre had deflated and that there were also wrinkles in the fuselage skin in the area of the nose undercarriage. No passengers nor crew were injured though the aircraft had to be repaired.
AirAsia first bought a 49% stake in Indonesia low-cost carrier AWAIR in 2004, and the carrier’s name was changed to Indonesia AirAsia in 2005.
FlightMaps Analytics shows that Indonesia AirAsia operates domestic services within Indonesia and also services to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Australia.
Flight QZ8501 was on the Surabaya-Singapore route when it lost contact with air traffic control at 07:24 Singapore time. It was due to land at Singapore's Changi Airport at 08:30 local time.
