Virginia-based network management specialist Innovative Concepts has been contracted by the US Navy to complete development of a mobile ad hoc networking communications system that will connect "swarms" of unmanned air vehicles.

Using the new system, a group of UAVs can be tasked to perform co-operative missions ranging from forming a simple communications relay to expanding situational awareness over a battlefield. Fitted with sensors, up to 100 mini-UAVs could be tasked with surveillance of "hundreds of square miles", says the company.
