The 3m-long, 4.1m-wide, 31.1m3 (2,155ft3) pressurised volume of a Spacehab - taking up one-quarter of the payload bay of the Shuttle and doubling the working space available for astronauts usually confined to the flight deck and mid-decks - can house 2,175kg of experiments, provided with 3.15kW of continuous power. Access to the module is by a tunnel from the airlock in the mid-deck. The modules have two view ports for Earth photography and sensor imaging, and can be supported for missions lasting up to ten days.

Lease of space aboard the Spacehabs includes payload manifesting; the use of the Spacehab Payload Processing Facility, at Port Canaveral, Florida; in-flight payload, ground and data-management support; and post-flight processing. The customer pays a pro-rata share of Shuttle power, cooling, data communications and the laboratory's resources.
