Installation of Aircell's new ATG 5000 high-speed Internet unit is now complete aboard a Gulfstream G200 operated by California-based aviation services firm FlightWorks.
The ATG 5000 began shipping last month, and the first installation was performed by Gulfstream Aerospace's Dallas service center, says Aircell in a statement.
Aircell's ATG 5000 operates over an air-to-ground (ATG) link in the United States. It provides standalone high-speed Internet capabilities for customers that don't require the integrated voice and narrowband data features of Aircell's Axxess cabin system, which supports multiple channels of worldwide voice and narrowband data service via the Iridium satellite network.
"As we begin 2010, the demand for in-flight Internet continues to accelerate. Our new ATG 5000 offers a new segment of aircraft operators the opportunity to increase their company's productivity by keeping executives fully connected in flight," says Aircell senior vice-president and general manager John Wade.
FlightWorks chief sales officer Ron Smith adds: "We're pleased to bring the very latest technology to our customers. Especially in this economy, the owner of the G200 sees a full Internet connection as an essential productivity tool in meeting the demands of their business. They're thrilled with the system's performance and are already in the process of installing it on their other aircraft."
