US thermoplastics specialist Kydex has developed a translucent variant of the material. After working on such a substance for several years, the company managed to finalise its makeup last year.

Formulating a translucent sheet material that is thermo-formable whilst complying with fire regulations, such as smoke toxicity, was a challenge, says Jim Medalie, president. The breakthrough came by re-engineering the colouring process.

The material can be used for a variety of components ranging from seat parts to class dividers and bars. Its translucency is particularly important as decorative LED lighting becomes more popular.

Kydex says that Boeing is interested to use the material for the staircase on the 747-8 and that Emirates is considering it for privacy dividers.
