Greater data streaming capability and lower weight are the main advantages of the "AeroConneX+" IFEC server from German communication technology specialist TriaGnoSys.
Among the new features are an integrated gatelink to 3G and 4G mobile phone networks and WLAN access point. This will allow uploading "perishable" content, such as news and current affairs programmes, when the aircraft is at the gate, which passengers can then stream to their mobile devices during flight.
At 4kg (9lb) the server is around 20% lighter than its predecessor, says Axel Jahn, TriaGnoSys' managing director. But the unit is also "very small" considering that it has no active cooling fans, he adds, and can thus be installed under the cabin ceiling or in luggage bins.
