French airlines unite
Airlines from four French overseas territories have formed a federation to co-operate on common issues. Called FADECOM, the group is comprised of Air Austral (Reunion, Indian Ocean), Air Caraibes (Caribbean), Air Caledonie (New Caledonia) and Air Tahiti Nui (French Polynesia). Joint purchases and lobbying are high on the group's proposed agenda.
Mobile use gets closer
Emirates is to install AeroMobile's in-flight mobile phone system on its entire fleet and expects to introduce the service in January, subject to regulatory approval. The Dubai carrier is to invest $27 million installing the system on its aircraft and is likely to start operation on routes between the Middle East and Asia. Rival Qantas earlier signed up for the system but has only agreed to trial the service for three months on a Boeing 767 operating on domestic routes early next year.
