The Australian government has put into service the first of five new Dornier 328s for search and rescue operations. The first aircraft is based in Darwin, with a further four to be based in north Queensland, south-east and south-west Australia. The aircraft will be operated by AeroRescue, which won the A$24.5 million ($18.3 million) contract in a competitive tender. The aircraft are equipped with surface search radar, forward-looking infrared night search equipment and satellite communications.
