The ion propulsion system on the NASA Deep Space 1 New Millennium programme spacecraft, launched on 24 October, shut down prematurely after just 4min 30s on 10 November. Ground controllers have so far failed to restart the engine which was to have propelled the spacecraft towards a rendezvous with the asteroid 1992 KD in July 1999.
