The Iranian government's Islamic Republic News Agency reported on 4 February that the country's first "space terminal" was inaugurated by its president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Iran launched its first "space research" rocket to an unspecified altitude.

No design details were given for the rocket but the government's statement said it would launch the domestically designed and built "Omid research satellite...in the near future".
