Israel could field an improved version of Lockheed Martin's SkyShield radar controlled gun as an immediate means of intercepting Kassam rockets launched from the Gaza Strip, while also seeking more comprehensive options including a laser-based system.

Lockheed says that in recent ground tests the rapid fire SkyShield was tested against simulated Kassam rockets, and that the company "managed to penetrate the warheads and destroy them". Efforts are focused on packing sufficient tungsten submunitions into a ground-launched system while maintaining the lethality.
