Elbit Systems has upgraded its Skylark 1 LE unmanned air system (UAS), after the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) changed its operational requirements.
"The system was upgraded according to feedback from the users in the field. It was not a total upgrade programme, but the changes were made to make it more efficient," an Israeli source says. The modified version is already in use.
Used mainly by the IDF's artillery units as a battalion-level system, the Skylark 1 LE is designed to perform data collection and target designation at mission ranges exceeding 32.4nm (59.9km). The man-portable Skylark has also been delivered to more than 20 other users worldwide.
Elbit says the Skylark 1 LE is a highly autonomous system, including a "fly-by-camera" mode, which enables day or night detection and the tracking of fixed or moving targets.
With a maximum take-off weight of 7.5kg (16.5lb), the air vehicle has a payload that includes a colour day camera, thermal imaging night camera and a laser illuminator. Mission endurance is 3h, and operating ceiling 15,000ft (4,580m).
