Israel's air force will operate more unmanned air systems (UAS) than manned platforms in 2030, according to an updated assessment.

The service is increasing the use of UAS constantly, with the platforms being equipped with more advanced payloads, enabling them to perform a wider variety of missions.

UAS are already accumulating more flight hours with the Israeli air force than manned aircraft, and its UAS squadrons are gaining operational experience and additional missions every month. Sources said the equipment is performing very well, even under tough conditions.

The sources also suggested the Lockheed Martin F-35 will probably be the last manned fighter the air force will procure, with future budgets to be channelled towards the acquisition of different UAS, including vertical take-off and landing and tilt-rotor types.

The air force's dramatic increase in the use of UAS has prompted Israeli industry to make a concentrated effort to improve their performance. Current areas of activity include using lighter materials and heavy fuel diesel engines.
