As part of its Advanced Communications Technology Satellite project, the Bangalore-based Satellite Centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation is developing a satellite with an unfurlable antenna.

The satellite, with its high-power output, would pave the way for enhanced data compression and omni-directional transmission. The design is being finalised, ISRO says, and validation of the technologies in the experimental satellite would open up the possibility of providing routine mobile video services.

The Advanced Communications Technology Satellite project is intended to validate technologies for inclusion in a future-generation Indian Insat domestic spacecraft.
