The Italian defence ministry has received formal go-ahead from the prime minister to buy an Airbus A319 Corporate Jet (ACJ) and a Dassault Falcon 900EX. The aircraft will replace two Gulfstream IIIs operated by the Italian air force's 31st Wing for VIP transport. The new aircraft will join two of each type recently introduced into service, replacing older aircraft. The deal is expected to be signed soon. The goal is to have the 900EX and ACJ in service by the end of the year. Airbus and Dassault have taken the Gulfstream IIIs as part of the deal, despite Italy's original plans to convert the aircraft into early warning support roles.
