Elettronica has been awarded a contract to supply Virgilius self-protection equipment for the Italian air force's future AgustaWestland AW101 combat search and rescue helicopters.
Combining electronic support measures and radar warning receiver equipment in a one-box design, Virgilius will serve as electronic warfare suite manager for a wider defensive aids subsystem.
This will also include a missile warning system already in Italian air force use, a twin-turret Elettronica ELT/572 directional infrared countermeasure configuration, a radar jammer to be derived from technology developed for the Eurofighter Typhoon, plus chaff and flare dispensers.
The Italian company will deliver 11 Virgilius kits under its order, the value for which has not been disclosed.
