The Italian parliament is to approve an army programme to buy four helicopter-mounted battlefield surveillance radar systems.

The Creso programme will use a Galileo Avionica surveillance radar and a ground-control station for data exploitation. Medium-sized utility helicopters will carry the radar.

Creso is to be a brigade/division-level system, interoperable with other NATO air-to-ground surveillance systems under the CAESAR (Coalition Aerial Surveillance and Reconnaissance) programme. The army says Creso will cost about c115 million ($106 million), with payments to be made in 2002-06.
