JAPAN AIRLINES HAS ordered five stretched Boeing 777-300s in a deal worth $800 million. It already has ten 777-200s on order, with options for a further ten. The first -200 Model will enter service in the second quarter of 1996, with service entry for the stretched -300 planned for 1998.

The new aircraft will replace the airline's short-range Boeing 747-100Bs on major trunk and regional routes within Japan. With a maximum high-density seating capacity of 520 seats, the 777-300 will carry slightly fewer passengers than the 747, but will have considerably improved fuel economy, with consumption said to be up to 30% lower.
