Eleven passengers and crew were injured, four seriously, aboard a Japan Airlines (JAL) McDonnell Douglas MD-11 after the aircraft encountered severe air turbulence on 8 June. The aircraft was en route from Hong Kong to Nagoya carrying 169 passengers and 11 crew, when it encountered the turbulence about 25min before landing. The JAL flight had begun to descend from an altitude of 17,000ft (5,200m) over the Chita Peninsular.
