THE JAPANESE AND US Governments have reached a compromise agreement on air-cargo rights, clearing the way for FedEx to start its Subic Bay-based intra-Asian freight network.

Under the agreement reached in Los Angeles, FedEx has been granted "beyond rights" to seven destinations in Asia.

Nippon Cargo Airlines, in return, has been promised a new route from Osaka's Kansai Airport to Chicago. There is also an understanding that, once the cargo issue has been settled, the two governments will begin discussing revisions to the original 1952 bilateral agreement, which Japan considers to outdated and unfair.
