Losses at Japan Air System (JAS) have begun to fall after two years of extensive cost-cutting, backed by a recovery in domestic passenger traffic. The carrier managed to end its 1994-5 year to the end of March showing a loss of just over ´3 billion ($35 million), a sharp drop on the ´11 billion deficit a year ago. Group sales were up by 3.4%, to ´281 billion, boosted by a 5.2% growth in passenger numbers. JAS hopes to end three years of consecutive losses when it reports figures for the end of the current financial year to March 1996. Sales are predicted to rise by 6%, to ´298 billion.
