The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and Northrop Grumman have for the first time demonstrated the ability to redirect continuously a GPS-guided Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) to hit a moving target as part of the Affordable Moving Target Engagement (AMSTE) programme. AMSTE uses remote offboard radar to feed real-time targeting data via a Joint STARS aircraft. The 900kg (2,000lb) weapon was released from a Lockheed Martin F-16 at 20,000ft (6,000m) and hit a target in traffic moving at 29km/h (18mph).
