Israel has asked Jordan to allow domestic and international flights to Eilat in southern Israel to be able to use a route through Jordanian airspace.

The move would eliminate problems which result from the use of the narrow "J-10" routing from northern to southern Israel. This corridor, which serves all Eilat- bound traffic, is just 7km (4nm) wide because of the many Israeli military training areas.

The Israeli civil aviation authority permits no more than eight aircraft to fly along the route simultaneously, which can lead to congestion on busy days.

According to Jacob Jacoby, deputy director general operations at the Israeli airports authority, the introduction of a parallel route close to the Israeli border in Jordan will allow inbound and outbound traffic to be separated.
