The Alliance combination of GE and Pratt & Whitney may have squared the series over engine sales for the Airbus A380 with the Emirates deal announced at the last Asian Aerospace, but there are those in high places who wonder how these unlikely partners ever got together.
Speaking in Dubai recently, Samuel Bodman, US deputy secretary of commerce, referred to the deal in which the Alliance won a $1.5-billion deal for its GP7000 engine to fly on Emirates' planned fleet of A380s.
Bodman told a business gathering: "I don't know how that Alliance ever got together. We had the bosses of GE and Pratt & Whitney sit in our office some time ago and they actually smiled at each other! Why, they even seemed to like each other!"
