A Korean Air (KAL) Boeing MD-11 freighter (HL-7373) crashed 6min after take-off from Shanghai Airport, China, on 15 April, in a residential area 10km (6nm) south of the airport. The three crew died and five people on the ground were reportedly killed, with at least 26 injured. The seven-year-old MD-11, on its way to Seoul, was converted to a freighter in 1996 and was involved in a tailscrape accident at Los Angeles the same year. The crash, KAL's 12th serious accident since 1990, follows a damning safety report on its operations.
