NASA is considering privatising operations at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, according to Roy Bridges, the centre's director. He has also suggested that the US Air Force, which operates the adjacent Cape Canaveral launch site, may follow suit. Another option would be to lease the sites for Shuttle and rocket launches. The moves follow a tightening of NASA's $14 billion annual budget. The Space Shuttle, already operated by the Boeing-Lockheed Martin United Space Alliance, saving NASA $1.2 billion a year, could be fully privatised.
