India's Kingfisher Airlines has appointed former SpiceJet chief Sanjay Aggarwal as its new CEO with immediate effect.

Aggarwal, who left SpiceJet in June, will report to Kingfisher's chairman and managing director Vijay Mallya. Mallya was also serving as CEO prior to Aggarwal's appointment.

"Sanjay's most recent assignment was as CEO of SpiceJet Limited which he successfully turned into profit. He has a good understanding of the Indian aviation industry and the various unique business imperatives in India," says Mallya.

Kingfisher's executive VPs and other officers will now report directly to Aggarwal, he adds.

"We look forward to a positive contribution from Sanjay in leading the growth and profitability of Kingfisher Airlines going forward whilst maintaining the highest level of service that has earned Kingfisher the distinction of being India's only five star-rated and most awarded airline in just six years since inception," says Mallya.

Prior to joining SpiceJet, Aggarwal was the chief operating and chief strategy officer of US-based fractional ownership operator Flight Options.
