Kuala Lumpur International Airport's (KLIA) new low-cost carrier terminal will be ready in April 2012, slightly after the last projected date of completion.

The terminal was originally due to be completed in the third quarter of 2011, but this was subsequently delayed to the first quarter of 2012.

Malaysia Airports Holdings' managing director Bashir Ahmad says the slight delay is due to the tendering process taking longer than expected.

The airport operator held a groundbreaking ceremony for the terminal yesterday.

Reports have said that the new terminal could bust its original budget of two billion ringgit ($635 million).

This is because the facility will eventually be 60% bigger than originally planned, says Bashir. The 242,000 sq m new terminal will be able to handle 30 millon passengers a year initially.

"Domestic and international flights will be separated at the new terminal, and AirAsia will have a section of its own," says Bashir.

AirAsia and other low-cost carriers currently operate out of a 60,000 sq m terminal away from the main KLIA.
