A senior management shake-up has taken place at Korean Air (KAL) that included the appointment of Lee Joong-hee as president and chief operating officer to replace Shim Yi-taek. Shim has been moved up to vice-chairman in the reshuffle and KAL says he will remain on its executive board.

Lee was most recently executive vice-president of KAL and president of the airline's passenger business division. His replacement as president of the passenger business division is Y H Kim, who was most recently executive vice-president of the airline's hotel and duty free business division.

Changes have also been made to the executive team of the airline's cargo business division. Executive vice-president cargo Ken Choi is now president of the cargo business division, replacing W Y Lee, who has become president of Hanjin Corp, which is the largest single shareholder in KAL. Cho Yang-ho remains chairman and chief executive of KAL.

New president and chief operating officer Lee joined KAL in 1969. He was appointed president of the airline's passenger business division in January 2003.
