Recovery is a relative term in Latin America, but traffic and revenue are up in the region and several carriers are now profitable.
LanChile, with help from its affiliates in Peru, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic, set the pace for the region with a 215% rise in net income during the third quarter.
Aerolineas Argentina actually had a larger revenue increase - 83% versus Lan's 67% - but that did not translate into as steep a climb in net income. Both LanChile and Aerolineas seem headed for profitable full-year results.
Mexico's Cintra, holding company for Aeromexico and Mexicana, reports an interim profit for the third quarter, but its year-to-date results remain negative. Few other Latin carriers release financial results, but they report improved traffic.
