LEISURE AIR, a Winston-Salem, North Carolina-based carrier, grounded temporarily by the US Federal Aviation Administration in November 1994, has filed for Chapter 11, bankruptcy protection.

The airline, which operates scheduled and charter flights, voluntarily suspended flight operations after the FAA completed a special weeklong safety inspection, which found major discrepancies in the airline's management administration, maintenance and flight-operation areas and record keeping.

The carrier resumed operations in January with four Airbus Industrie A320s, eliminating its two McDonnell Douglas DC-10s and a Boeing 757.
