Lufthansa Technik has adapted a narrowbody hangar at its Malta base to accommodate twin-aisle aircraft up to the Airbus A340.
The German MRO group’s site on the Mediterranean island has thus far comprised two widebody hangars and a smaller third facility for narrowbodies. But the latter has now been enlarged and equipped with a flexible docking system to create a third widebody bay.
The modification will add flexibility as demand for A330 and A340 work grows, says Stephan Drewes, chief executive of Lufthansa Technik Malta
LHT expects a “record-breaking” workload at the Maltese site in 2014, after clocking up 750,000 man-hours there in 2012.
The facility – at which around 600 are employed – is specialised in base maintenance for Lufthansa’s Airbus fleet barring the A380 and its Boeing 737s.
