The Japan Ground Self-Defence Force (JGSDF) is looking for a replacement for its fleet of 17 Mitsubishi MU-2s (designated LR-1) liaison and reconnaissance aircraft. Replacement types reportedly under consideration include the Beech Super King Air, Piper Cheyenne and Piaggio Avanti. A selection is expected to be made by mid-1996, with the first LR-X to be ordered in 1997.
