The new terminal of Costa Rica's Liberia airport, an increasingly popular leisure destination for US and Canadian travellers, will open doors in November after suffering a delay of several months.

Coriport, which in 2008 acquired a 20-year concession to operate the airport located in Guanacaste province, is investing over $40 million in a complete airport revamp that includes a new 23,000m2 (247,650ft2) passenger terminal building to increase the maximum hourly passenger throughput from 900 to 1500.

A source at Costa Rica's transport ministry confirms that the original concession contract scheduled the opening of the new terminal building for this month. "Coriport may be fined for the delay", he says, adding, however, that he was unaware of the amount of the fine.

The local press is reporting Coriport would have to pay a $540.000 fine for the delay.

ADS&HAS, a Houston-based Canadian-American company affiliated with the Houston Airport System, is a participant in the Coriport consortium.
