LIBYAN LEADER Colonel Qadhafi has angered the UN and caused severe embarrassment for Saudi Arabia by sending a Libyan Arab Airlines Boeing 727 to Jeddah and back in defiance of UN sanctions.
The 727 carried pilgrims to Saudi Arabia for the Muslim Hadj.
The UN sanctions, which forbid flights to or from Libya, were imposed in the wake of the Pan American World Airways bombing over Lockerbie in 1988.
The incident provides a dilemma for both the USA and UK. While both support the sanctions, Saudi Arabia is one of their most important regional allies.
