Australia's Lloyd Helicopters has announced plans to build a commercial heliport in Melbourne, Victoria. The company says that it is negotiating a central site near Melbourne's dock area. Plans call for the heliport to be fully operational in 1996.

The project will entail a total investment of around A$25 million ($18.3 million) for infrastructure, new aircraft and support services over the next three to five years, says Lloyd's managing director, Alan Latham. The heliport will provide hangar space for seven or eight light- to medium-category helicopters, and workshops for component overhauls and repairs to support the company's fleet of 40 aircraft.

Latham says: "Not only does Melbourne need a centralised heliport, but this facility will also provide additional infrastructure for major contracts recently won [by Lloyd] in South-East Asia and Australia."
