The United States Air Force has selected a Lockheed Martin-led team to develop its Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) space-surveillance early-warning programme. The total value of the project is estimated at $15 billion. Under SBIRS contracts, five geosynchronous Earth-orbit and two high Earth-orbiting sensors will be delivered. GenCorp Aerojet, Northrop Grumman and Honeywell are team members. The SBIRS will replace the Defence Support Programme in providing space-based early warning.
