Kuwait’s future fleet of Typhoon combat aircraft will be equipped with Lockheed Martin Sniper targeting pods, under a contract placed via the Eurofighter partner company Leonardo.
Deliveries will start during 2017 in support of an integration programme for Kuwait, the first Typhoon buyer to select the Sniper for its aircraft. Lockheed will supply 18 pods, plus logistics support under the deal.
“The Kuwait air force will see significant targeting benefits, including high-resolution imagery, advanced targeting modes, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities,” says Ken Fuhr, fixed-wing programme director at Lockheed Martin Missiles & Fire Control.
Eurofighter is due to begin deliveries of 28 aircraft to the Gulf state during 2019, including six two-seat trainers.
Lockheed says the Typhoon will become the ninth platform to receive the Sniper pod, joining the Boeing AV-8B, B-1, B-52, F-15, F/A-18, Fairchild-Republic A-10, Lockheed F-16 and Mitsubishi F-2.
