LORAL PLANS TO enter the high-speed, digital interactive-communications market with its CyberStar satellite system.

The first satellite, serving the USA, will be launched in 1998 into geostationary orbit at 110¡W. The CyberStar will be the first satellite to be operated exclusively on the Kabroadband frequency, relaying ultra-clear, digitised data at speeds 100 times faster than those of standard telephones. High-power spot-beam coverage will enable customers to transmit and receive using small, low-cost, antennae.

The CyberStars will provide residential and business customers with desktop video-telephony, high data-rate computer networking, medical and technical tele-imaging, interactive personal-computer services and computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing data-transmission capability.

The satellites will employ the technology being developed for Loral's Globalstar worldwide hand-held telephone mobile-communications satellite system.
