BOEING 737-300s FITTED with Flight Dynamics head-up guidance systems (HGS) have been approved by the US Federal Aviation Administration for take-off operations in visibility conditions as low as 90m (300ft) runway visual range (RVR).

Operators of HGS-equipped 737-300s were cleared to perform landing operations with RVRs of 210m in 1994 and the FAA is expected to approve a further reduction, to 90m, in 1996.

The Flight Dynamics HGS has also become the first head-up system to be approved to display the traffic-alert and collision-avoidance system (TCAS) resolution advisory. The FAA has approved the Portland, Oregon-based companies system for use with the TCAS symbology on the 737-300. The clearance allows pilots of HGS-fitted aircraft to follow the TCAS resolution advisory while continuing to scan for traffic and without needing to re-focus or check head-down displays.
