Lufthansa Technik’s in-flight entertainment venture AerQ is to close down, five years after its creation, citing difficulties in entering the market.

The decision affects around 180 personnel at the Hamburg-based firm.

AerQ was established in 2019 as a venture between Lufthansa Technik and LG Electronics.

It developed a digital platform in-flight entertainment system branded Aerena, and introduced the system earlier this year with installation on an Airbus A320 (D-AIUQ) operated by Lufthansa Group carrier Discover Airlines.

AerQ stated that the installation would enable the carrier to learn about its passengers’ entertainment preferences and customise them accordingly.

Usage would be tested in order to “fully realise” Aerena’s potential, it added.

Aerena has been undergoing testing on a Discover Airlines A320

AerQ insists Aerena is “one of the most advanced products of its kind”, and has “met all expectations” regarding features, quality and customer satisfaction during flight operations.

But the company says it has been “facing significant obstacles” to enter a “very sensitive market” for in-flight entertainment systems.

“For this reason the shareholders have mutually agreed to conclude AerQ’s journey here and part ways,” it adds, with the result that operations – including development of Aerena – will immediately cease.

AerQ says it will undergo a wind-down and “orderly closure” following the decision.
