Maintenance company Lufthansa Technik is in talks to found a new Bulgarian subsidiary to service aircraft at Sofia Airport.
The subsidiary is expected to take the form of a joint venture to perform maintenance on Airbus and Boeing narrowbody aircraft, although Lufthansa Technik has yet to confirm any details.
A spokeswoman for Lufthansa Technik says that the company is in negotiations with a firm it identifies as Bulgarian Aviation Group.
The country’s main airlines consolidated earlier this year when Hemus Air was given clearance to take over Bulgaria Air.
Hemus Air’s chief is reported to have stated that the Lufthansa Technik subsidiary will be 80% owned by the German firm, and would come into operation next year.
Lufthansa Technik is yet to state when a firm agreement on the operation will be signed.
It already has similar joint-venture arrangements in Europe – Lufthansa Technik Budapest and Lufthansa Technik Malta – to handle narrowbody servicing, although the Maltese operation is expanding to deal with widebodies as well.
