German flag-carrier Lufthansa is to order another 41 aircraft including 30 Airbus A320-family jets for its own operations and nine Airbus A330-300s for Swiss International Air Lines.
Lufthansa is taking 20 A321s, four A320s and six A319s, some of which amount to a firming of options from an order for up to 65 Airbuses placed towards the end of last year.
These A320-family aircraft will be introduced from 2011 and used by Lufthansa on European routes. No engine selection has been disclosed. Lufthansa has CFM International CFM56-powered A319s and A320s but International Aero Engines V2500-powered A321s.
Lufthansa’s decision, approved by the supervisory board today, also confirms plans, revealed by ATI, flightglobal.com's sister news source, last month, to order nine A330-300s for subsidiary Swiss.
They will be used to replace the Pratt & Whitney-powered A330-200s in the Swiss fleet; deliveries will start in early 2009.
Lufthansa chief Wolfgang Mayrhuber says: "For Swiss this investment is the reward for the successful turnaround, for courageous strategic measures, for an excellent performance by the team and successful integration in the Lufthansa fold."
Swiss will also receive the remaining pair of aircraft in the 41-jet order, two A320s. They will arrive in 2011. No engine selection has been given for these but all of Swiss’ other A320-family jets are fitted with CFM56s.
