Queensland's Mackay Airport will undergo an A$10 million ($8.9 million) upgrade in 2010, including a resurfacing of the airport's main runway.
Of the total amount, A$8 million will be spent resurfacing the 1980 meter runway, with A$2 million spent on terminal improvements, says Mackay Airport.
"This project will ensure the ongoing integrity of the runway and its ability to meet the demands of the growing number of aircraft movements at Mackay Airport," says airport general manger Terry Simpson.
The runway upgrades will start in May 2010 and take six weeks to be completed. Normal flight operations will not be affected, as work will only be carried out between 2100 and 0600, says Simpson.
During night hours cargo flights will use the airport's smaller cross runway.
The revamp of the terminal building will start as soon as possible, and the airport will consult with stakeholders and seek expressions of interest in early 2010.
The airport is served by Tiger Airways, Jetstar, Regional Express (Rex), Virgin Blue, and Qantas Airways, according the airport's web site.
