Malaysia is considering a purchase of Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker fighters and Mil Mi-17 transport helicopters. This follows a visit by Malaysian prime minister Mathatir Mohammad to Russia. Meanwhile, the Royal Malaysian Navy has signed a $100 million deal for six GKN Westland Super Lynx naval helicopters.

Malaysia is believed to be close to signing a $200 million order for 40 Mi-17s, although it is not as close to a Su-27 purchase. Two Mi-17s were delivered last year, equipped for firefighting. The Sukhoi aircraft would provide a long-range complement to the Royal Malaysian Air Force's MAPO MiG-29 Fulcrums and Boeing F/A-18s.

In the region the Sukhoi fighter is operated by China and Vietnam, while India operates the Su-30MK variant of the Flanker family.

Malaysia will operate its Super Lynx from two UK-built frigates. The first delivery is due in 2001, with the rest to be delivered by 2003. The Lynx beat the Kaman SH-2GSuper SeaSprite and they are expected to go head-to-head again in a competition to supply up to 30 helicopters for 27 German-built offshore patrol vessels.

• India has signed a contract for delivery of four Kamov Ka-31 airborne early-warning helicopters to its navy. The contract price is estimated at $92 million. The helicopters are intended to equip the Viraat carrier and three new frigates ordered from Russia.
