Discussions are under way between Marconi Electronic Systems and MAPO over the supply of aircraft radars destined for export customers of the MiG-29 fighter.

The UK company is also hoping to take advantage of the growing market potential for upgrades as German, Israeli, Romanian and Russian companies line up to offer users' modification packages. MAPO has already had discussions with Thomson-CSF for the supply of its RC-400 multimode radar for MiG-29 upgrades.

The talks with MAPO "-are in the first stages, and are about a family of radars for upgrade packages", says Marconi Electronic Systems.

The Blue Fox and Blue Vixen radars used in the British Aerospace Sea Harrier are among those under discussion. Likely candidates for a radar and avionics upgrade include India - which already uses the Blue Fox in its Sea Harriers and operates large numbers of MiG-29s - and several East European operators.
