UAE air force pilots could soon be flying simulated combat missions in aircraft equipped with Marconi's revolutionary "fifth generation" training system.

Marconi Avionics has been "down selected" to the supply the UAE with 150 sets of Rangeless Airborne Instrumented Debriefing System (RAIDS).

The system involves installing on aircraft a GPS-equipped pod which passes positional and other data to other aircraft participating in combat exercises and ground control stations. During sorties, all flight parameters of the host aircraft are digitally recorded, along with significant real-time events and voice messages, for debriefing.

Joe Parker, business director of Marconi Avionics customer support group, says there is strong interest in RAIDS in the Middle East.

Parker says the system also enhances flight safety because a ground proximity warning device is integral to its design.
